Let's be honest. The original Pokemon games were really hard. Once you got going, they got easier, but in the beginning, their late-learned moves weren't helpful. I remember evolving a Metapod for Brock's Gym, and it didn't learn Confusion where it was supposed to. I actually ended up winning the battle with Tackle. Longest ten minutes ever. Luckily, NPC potion using wasn't around then.
